Drug Screening

What is the difference between DOT and Non-DOT drug testing?

DOT drug testing is mandated by the U.S. Department of Transportation for safety-sensitive positions in industries such as trucking, aviation, rail, and transit. Testing follows federal regulations outlined in Title 49 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 40.

Non-DOT drug testing is not required by federal law. Private employers, organizations, and institutions establish their own drug testing policies and procedures, customized to their operational needs.

What methods are commonly used for drug screening?

  • Urine testing

  • Blood testing

  • Hair follicle testing

  • Saliva (oral fluid) testing

What should I bring with me for a drug screening?

  • A valid (non-expired) government-issued photo ID (driver’s license, passport, military ID, etc.).

  • Any authorization forms or paperwork provided by your employer.

What is the drug screening process?

  • You must provide a minimum of 45 mL (approximately 1.5 fluid ounces) of urine.

  • If unable to initially provide a full sample, you will have up to three hours to complete the collection.

  • Leaving the collection facility before completion may be treated as a refusal to test, which can have the same consequences as a positive result under employer policies.
